The event Urban Agriculture for Resilient Cities: Lessons learnt in policy, research and practice gathered 65 participants from the wide RUAF partnership, including representatives from farmers’ organisation, local and national authorities, UN Agencies, research centres, and NGOs from over 20 Countries in Almere, at the multifunctional city farm estate The Kemphaan on 19-20 May.

Ten years ago, ETC Foundation initiated a programme named: “Resource Centre on Urban Agriculture and Forestry” (RUAF). The RUAF project developed into an international network of 1 global and 7 regional Resource Centres on Urban Agriculture and Food Security, which in 2004 obtained independent legal status as the RUAF Foundation.

Climate change, drought, population growth - they could all threaten future food supplies. But global agriculture, with its dependence on fuel and fertilisers is also highly vulnerable to an oil shortage, as Cuba found out 20 years ago. By means of organic urban agriculture Cuba reportedly has been able to provide four million tonnes of vegetables a year making the country 90% self-sufficient in fruit and vegetables.

The number of people around the world who live in cities is increasing steadily. For the first time in history the percentage of population that lives in cities has passed the 50 percent mark. These cities are quickly becoming the principal spaces for planning and implementation of strategies that aim to eradicate hunger and poverty. Many cities cannot cope with the rapid population growth and face enormous challenges in creating sufficient employment; in providing basic services; and in planning and managing urban wastes and waste water.
