It seeks to provide individual gardeners or community groups with the necessary background information to address this issue. There are several important aspects of soil contamination which are addressed in this guide, including the dangers of gardening in contaminated soil, the potential sources of contamination, ways to evaluate the level of contamination present in the soil, and your options for addressing the problem. At the end of this document there are several appendices with information pertaining to the topics discussed here. Most of these are Montreal- and Canada–specific, but should provide some good starting points for similar resources in other cities and countries.

Crop Production Reuse of Wastes & Wastewater Training & Extension non-RUAF Publications Mon, 07 Aug 2006 08:32:54 +0000 Femke Hoekstra 1003 at http://www.ruaf.org Participatory Technology Development for Sustainable Intensification of Urban Agriculture http://www.ruaf.org/node/975
Gordon Prain

In: Cities Farming for the Future - Urban Agriculture for Green and Productive Cities

The urban setting offers special advantages for food and animal production, but also presents particular challenges. Urban agriculture needs to be highly innovative in competing and adapting to new situations. Urban and peri-urban agricultural systems exhibit even higher levels of complexity than rural upland systems and call for a wider range of participatory methods. This chapter discusses participatory agricultural research and its relevancy for the urban setting. A sustainable urban livelihoods framework is discussed, which enables to better understand and define the multi-sectoral, institutional and policy aspects of urban agriculture in order to identify appropriate interventions. Specific participatory methods are discussed for urban horticulture and livestock to help urban producers adapt agriculture to urban realities.
Training & Extension Research & Monitoring and Evaluation Methodologies RUAF Publications Publications Thu, 06 Jul 2006 12:21:30 +0000 Femke Hoekstra 975 at http://www.ruaf.org Introduction http://www.ruaf.org/node/966
René van Veenhuizen

In: Cities Farming for the Future - Urban Agriculture for Green and Productive Cities

Attention to urban agriculture has increased markedly during the last couple of decades. The number of activities to promote urban agriculture at international, national and local level has grown, but urban farmers in many cities in the world still struggle to get their main survival strategy recognised by city authorities. The demand of policy makers and local practitioners for inspiring examples of successful policies and actions in cities is therefore growing. Urban agriculture contributes to a wide variety of urban issues and is increasingly being accepted and used as a tool in sustainable city development. Currently the challenge is its integration into city planning and facilitation of its multiple benefits for urban inhabitants. This book seeks to present the current state of affairs regarding urban agriculture and sustainable urban development.
Crop Production Livestock Production (Agro)Forestry Aquaculture Food Security & Nutrition Health Reuse of Wastes & Wastewater Local Economic Development Policy Formulation & Action Planning Land Use Planning Finance & Credit Training & Extension Gender Mainstreaming Research & Monitoring and Evaluation Methodologies RUAF Publications Publications Thu, 06 Jul 2006 11:54:33 +0000 Femke Hoekstra 966 at http://www.ruaf.org Cities Farming for the Future - Urban Agriculture for Green and Productive Cities (2006) http://www.ruaf.org/node/961

Edited by René van Veenhuizen (2006). Expansion of cities stimulated by globalisation and privatisation poses risks for existing livelihoods as well as opportunities for new livelihoods by making use of urban employment and markets. Decision makers in urban and rural government agencies and in development agencies alike need to recognise these changes that are already underway, and respond in ways that turn these changes into opportunities for new livelihoods for the periurban and rural poor. This paper discusses some of the practices currently in place, which open up marketing avenues for the poor and for women.
Training & Extension Gender Mainstreaming UA-Magazine Mon, 04 Jul 2005 18:13:05 +0000 373 at http://www.ruaf.org Credit and investment in Urban Agriculture in Nepal http://www.ruaf.org/node/296
Roshan Shrestha

In: UA Magazine 9 - Financing Urban Agriculture

In Nepal there are 58 municipalities and about 80% of the Nepalese population depends on agriculture, which is mainly based in the rural areas. Due to the high urbanisation rate, most of the arable land of Kathmandu inner city is occupied by housing and agricultural production has thus been reduced. More arable land is in the city's outer ring area, where people are involved in agriculture (rice and wheat) and horticulture and processing on a larger scale, the products of which are sold at the local market. The impact of two cooperatives are described here: MPSACCO, a women-only cooperative which has adopted two types of lending methodologies: Individual lending and Peer lending, and SSACCO, which is a mixed membership cooperative, adopted Individual lending only.
Crop Production Finance & Credit Training & Extension UA-Magazine Thu, 23 Jun 2005 15:03:44 +0000 296 at http://www.ruaf.org Social policy or an unheard claim: the case of Texcoco, Mexico http://www.ruaf.org/node/295
Gabriel Ramírez García

In: UA Magazine 9 - Financing Urban Agriculture

In Mexico, large portions of farmland have been incorporated into the hierarchy and dynamics of big cities. One of the territories that share the megalopolitan dynamics of Mexico City is Texcoco, located in the state of Mexico, 20 kilometres from the capital city of Mexico. In Texcoco, 42 out of 54 communities are considered rural, and the mission of the present government is to preserve their production space from the urban influence. In 1997, the Rural Development Unit started the Productive Micro-credit Programme as a pilot. The goal of the programme was to strengthen farming activities in the region especially for small- and medium-sized producers, through the provision of economic aid. This programme is evaluated here.
Crop Production Finance & Credit Training & Extension UA-Magazine Thu, 23 Jun 2005 14:58:16 +0000 295 at http://www.ruaf.org Biodiversity, Poverty and Urban Agriculture, in Latin America http://www.ruaf.org/node/218
Alain Santandreu, Alberto Gómez Perazzoli and Marielle Dubbeling

In: UA Magazine 6 - Transition to Ecological Urban Agriculture: A Challenge

Over the years the poor have migrated to the cities in Latin America and the Caribbean in their search for higher incomes and a better life. Cities in the region have grown rapidly, and for the first time in history there are more poor people living in urban than in rural areas. Among the strategies employed by both the poorer urban population, and the local governments are agriculture and biodiversity conservation. Recent research conducted in Havana (Cuba); Montevideo (Uruguay) and Porto Alegre (Brazil) provide ample examples thereof.
Crop Production Local Economic Development Training & Extension UA-Magazine Thu, 16 Jun 2005 09:37:10 +0000 218 at http://www.ruaf.org Farmer Field Schools: an ideal method for urban agriculture? http://www.ruaf.org/node/204
Gordon Prain

In: UA Magazine 5 - Methodologies for UA research, policy development, planning and implementation

Farmers in urban settings sometimes have limited pools of local technical knowledge on which to draw compared to their rural counterparts, sometimes because they are new to farming, sometimes because the environment in which they farm is new and unfamiliar.
