Module 8: History and trends I

Introduction

The next two modules are distinct but complementary.  Both consider precedents and historical backgrounds as well as current trends and related future perspectives.  Whereas module 9 will focus on differences in urban agriculture that are found between various places, this module concentrates on some of the commonalities that can be identified globally.  Rather than claiming that urban agriculture is the same all around the world, it looks for common ground: it identifies some shared traits of urban agriculture that can be discerned between different parts of the world, and some of their mutual lineages.

Learning Objectives

After completing this module, you will be able to:

  • Analyse urban agriculture in different settings so as to distinguish the common aspects across those settings as well the main differences found between them
  • Ground current practices of urban agriculture historically, to define the main explanations for the way it is today
  • Project current practices of urban agriculture into the future, to anticipate where it may be heading in coming years and beyond
  • State the key global trends that may help shape this future direction of urban agriculture
