The city of Cairo has been the capital of Egypt for more than a 1,000 years and its roots extend back more than 50 centuries. The city’s population in 2006 was 7.8 million on a total area of about 3,085 km². Cairo is made up of one old city and five new cities encompassing about 29 municipalities.
